John Cecil Shipway was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, on the 20th February 1893, and enlisted at Montreal, Quebec, Canada, 3rd November 1914, giving his next of kin as his father, Frank Shipway, of 31, Warner Road, Sheffield. He stated his occupation as a salesman, and he had previously served for three months with the Toronto Home Guards. He was 5 feet 8 inches tall, fair complexion, blue eyes and auburn hair, and belonged to the Church of England. He was described as being slightly bow legged.
